ea-judges-ribbon Judges

Our esteemed guests…

This year's speakers will be judging the work and regaling to us tales of their own feats of strength.

Roy White

Roy knew he wanted to be a designer since high school. Born in London, Roy graduated from the Mander College of Art & Design at 18 and cut his teeth early at renowned London design firms, The Partners and Carol Dempsey and Thirkell, and shortly founded his own successful design firm, The Third Man, working with the likes of Virgin Records and the Royal Opera House. Moving to Australia in the early 1990’s, Roy was involved in major Olympic-related branding projects, most notably, the Olympic Village and Olympic Stadium identities. The two-year-long initiative to re-brand the Australian Government Services Agency as “Centrelink” kept Roy busy until moving to Canada in 1998. Prior to forming Subplot, Roy held the position of Associate Creative Director and, in 2003, of Acting Creative Director of DDB Canada’s design division, Karacters, one of Vancouver’s leading creative design consultancies. Notable projects included Urban Fare, Earl’s Restaurants and the Finning Annual Report.

Roy’s work has been recognized internationally in design competitions and publictions across 3 continents, including Creative Review, AR100, Graphic Designers of Canada, Graphis, HOW, Graphics World, Communication Arts, Design Edge Canada, Coupe, London International Awards Lotus Awards, ReBrand 100, New York Festivals, Design Exchange, Applied Arts, Coupe Awards and Pentawards.

Roy is an accredited professional member of the Graphic Designers of Canada, and sits on the provincial board as the BC PR Chair.

Chuck Phillips

Chuck has always been obsessed with ideas and creativity, and it's this passion for innovation that has helped him create international-calibre work as creative director for the newly formed Clarkhuot/Cocoon. He lives by the mantra "There is always a better way", and this standard leads the creative team to constantly push boundaries and create more engaging brands.

He truly believes that everyone is creative. His workshop at the Canadian Sponsorship Forum served to inspire those who do not see creativity in themselves. His other seminars have strived to help guide businesses in realizing innovation in their own arenas. His work has been recognized across North America, including prestigious wins from the Art Directors Club of Canada, New York Festivals, Applied Arts, I.D. Magazine, and as one of the Top 100 Package Designs of 2010.

Todd Blevins

As an act of sheer desperation on the part of a guidance counselor in Grade 10, I was asked to take an aptitude test. As a result, I was told that I could be one of two things: an advertising art director, or the proprietor of a souvenir shop. Seriously.

So eventually, after falling asleep too many times in art history lectures, I decided to heed the advice of that guidance counselor and dropped out of Carleton University to study graphic design at Algonquin College. Design diploma in hand, I worked at various boutique design shops around Ottawa where I discovered my first true love: typography.

But a hatred of ugly art direction (it was the early 90s, after all) and the desire to do something about it drew me over to the dark side (advertising art direction).

In the 14 years that have followed, I’ve enjoyed working on some great brands like Toyota, Subway, Sunlight, The Calgary Zoo, Kal Tire, and the Calgary Stampede. I’ve been recognized in many local, national and international shows. I’ve also had the privilege of serving as a judge for several national shows such as Marketing, Applied arts, Strategy & CAPIC.

For the past 7 years I’ve been working at Trigger in Calgary. During my time here, I’ve been promoted to Creative Director. Nowadays, I find I’ve come full circle, relying heavily on my design background, developing creative that works across all traditional and interactive media.

In 2005, I started teaching part-time at the Alberta College of Art and Design. And in 2010 & 2011, I was the Judging Chairperson for the Anvil Awards (Calgary).
